The History of PYBOP
Original PYBOP by Shelly BowenThe word “PYBOP” was introduced to me in elementary school by an exceptional teacher. The acronym stands for Put Your Brains On Paper.

Every few weeks, I’d fill another yellow cardstock-covered memo book, neatly labeled PYBOP on the cover, with essays, fiction, riddles, theories, silly poems, lists, and quizzes. Then I’d start another one. I have dozens of these PYBOPs; each year, the handwriting gets a little neater. The spelling a little better. The content a little more interesting.

Occasionally, the teacher’s response in red cursive appeared spidering sideways down the margins. These responses were thrilling. She had 32 or so PYBOPs to read each week, and my goal was to incite that red remark.

It’s a different audience now. And the paper is digital. But my goals haven’t changed all that much.
